General Hours of Work
General hours for the medical administrative assistant are 8 AM to 5 PM, however, your hours would be dependent on the office you work in.

Show hospitals decide to have a full-time, 24 hours a day business office, depending on the policy and demand of the hospital.

Pay Range
Your pay range will vary depending on the skills that you are utilizing, the size of the facility you are working for and any certifications you have.

For instance, in general, a certified coder, will make a higher wage than a payment poster.

OLMIS lists the pay range for "Medical Secretaries" in Marion, Polk and Yamhill County as $11.28 to $21.88, with an average of $16.07. It is our belief that this average is skewed by Yamhill county statistics.

Our average seen, depending on the duties is $11.00 to $18.00, with an average starting pay being $12.00.

Duties
Perform secretarial duties utilizing specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties include surgery scheduling, billing patients and insurance companies, coding procedures and diagnosis, abstracting information from medical records, collection on delinquent accounts, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence.

Requirements
There is no state or federal governing board for Medical Administrative Assistants. However, in general, to be considered for a position, an applicant must have some formal training or experience.

In addition, an employer, at their option may require an employee to obtain a certification. Such certifications may be obtained from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) or the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders).
