Medical Assistant
Work Setting
Physician Offices, Clinics, Urgent Care, Immediate
Care and limited hospitals.
General Hours of Work
General hours for the medical assistant and 8 AM to
5 PM, however, your hours would be dependent on the office you work
in.
Some urgent care and immediate care settings may stay open later
than other clinics and physician offices. In addition, some larger
clinics will have night clinics, which may require you to stay in
the evening.
The thing that each medical assistant should remember is you are
in the medical field to help people. As such, you may be required to
stay over your shift to assist the physician with an emergency
visit. You may display flexibility.
General Days of Work
The days per week are generally Monday through Friday, with
an occasional Saturday. However, once again, this will depend
heavily on the setting you work in. For instance, Urgent Care and
Immediate Care settings are usually open on Sunday.
Pay Range
Your pay range will depend on the setting and the
doctors you work for.
OLMIS states that the pay range for a medical assistant is $10.05 -
17.37 for Marion County with the average of $13.33. This figure may
be slightly skewed by Kaiser Permanente.
It is our experience that the pay range will be anywhere from $10.50
- 14.00 per hour.
Duties
A medical assistants duties will vary depending on type of
physician they are working with and the level of training they have
received. For instance, in a family practice setting, the MA will
generally use a broader scope of skills, then a medical assistant in
specialty.
Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the
direction of physician. Clinical duties may include taking and
recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for
examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as
directed by physician. Additionally, a Medical Assistant should know
how to perform EKG's, Eye / Ear Lavage, Urinalysis, Throat Cultures
and other various clinical duties.
Requirements
Though there are no specific requirements for the State of Oregon
for medical assistants, as a general rule, an employer expects that
a medical assistant have some sort of formal training or experience.

In addition to education, some employers require a national
certification. To that end, some employers do not require a
certification but will pay additional compensation for it. Below are
some of the certifications:
CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) by the
AAMA
RMA (Registered Medical Assistant by the
AMT
Lastly, some employers require that a medical assistant have
Limited License X-Ray certification. This certification is by
the Oregon State Board of
Radiology. It entitles the medical assistant to take x-rays of
patients under the direction of the physician. Generally, employers
will pay additional compensation for the certification.
