Licensed Practical Nurse
Work Setting
Physician Offices, Clinics, Urgent Care, Immediate
Care Clinics, Skilled Nursing Facilities and limited hospitals.
General Hours of Work
General hours for the licensed practical nurse in
the clinic are 8 AM to
5 PM, however, your hours would be dependent on the office you work
in.
Some urgent care and immediate care settings may stay open later
than other clinics and physician offices. In addition, some larger
clinics will have night clinics, which may require you to stay in
the evening.
In the Skilled Nursing Facility and Hospitals, LPN's and RN's are on
staff 24 hours a day. Therefore, they generally operate on three
shifts. The first shift is AM which generally starts at 6:00 AM and
ends at 2:00 or 2:30 PM. The second shift is generally referred to
PM or Evenings. It starts at 2:00 PM and will generally end between
10:00 PM and 10:30 PM. The third shift is NOC or Nights. This shift
will generally start at 10:00 and end at 6:00 or 6:30 AM.
General Days of Work
The days per week are generally Monday through Friday, with
an occasional Saturday for clinics..
However, once again, this will depend
heavily on the setting you work in. For instance, Urgent Care and
Immediate Care settings are usually open on Sunday.
Skilled Nursing Facilities and Hospitals requires a licensed nurse
on staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Pay Range
Your pay range will depend on the setting you choose
to work in. For instance, an LPN can expect to make a lower wage
working in the clinic, than in the hospital or skilled nursing
facility. However, the physical demand is lower in the clinic than
in the skilled nursing facility.
OLMIS states that the pay range for a licensed practical nurse is $15.15 -
25.02 for Marion County with the average of $20.97.
It is our experience that the pay range will be anywhere from $14.00
- 18.00 per hour for the clinic setting and $17.00 - 25.00 per hour
for the skilled nursing facilities and hospitals.
Duties
A licensed practical nurse in the skilled nursing facility
will generally work as a charge nurse supervising CNAs and CMAs. In
the skilled nursing facility an LPN may be responsible for passing
meds, providing wound care, catheterization, working with IV's,
assessing patients, contacting physicians, etc.
A licensed practical nurse in the clinic setting may assist the
physician in assessing and treating patients, administering
medications, charting histories, assisting in office surgeries,
performing diagnostic measures, etc. In addition, an LPN may be
responsible for triage.
Requirements
A licensed practical nurse may be licensed by the
Oregon State Board of Nursing.
To obtain licensure, a person must attend a board approved nursing
program.
Local schools offering an approved practical nursing program are:
Valley Medical College
Chemeketa Community College
In addition to education, some employers may require that an
employee have additional training in specialized areas, such as IV
therapy. If an applicant has documentation of specialized training,
an LPN should retain the documentation for employers.
