Work Setting
Skilled Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Residential Foster Care Homes
General Hours of Work
Hours for this position are varied, depending on the setting you work in. Generally, there are three shifts.
The first shift is AM, or Days. This shift can run from 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM, or close to such.
The second shift is PM or Evenings. This shift generally will start at 2:00 PM and end at 10:00 PM.
Some employers elect to run a 12 hours shift, dividing the day into two shifts, with an AM and PM.
General Days of Work
In general, CMA's receive a rotating shift. Some of the different rotation for eight hour shifts are 4 on - 2 off or a 21 day rotation. Some employers may offer a set schedule, however, as a rule of thumb, most shifts are rotating.
Pay Range
Your pay range will vary depending on the facility that you work in, the shift that you choose and the experience that you have.
For Skilled Nursing Facilities, the pay range will generally fall within 10.50 and 14.50 per hour.
Most employers will offer a competitive benefit package once you have worked there for ninety days.
Duties
Dispense medications pursuant to the physicians orders. Medications may include pills, liquid format or injections, such as insulin. Chart medication dispensing, take blood pressures, vitals, and glucose levels.
In addition, some facilities will have their CMA's provide basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Perform duties, such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, or transfer residents (patients), or change linens for a portion of the shift.
CMA's skill set can vary depending on the facility you work in. A CMA at an assisted living facility will likely do less invasive medication dispensing than a CMA at a Skilled Nursing Facility.
Requirements
Applicants must have a current, unencumbered certification as a Nursing Assistant and Medication Assistant from the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
In addition to certification requirements, all CMA's will be required to submit to drug testing and Department of Human Services criminal background.
